Top individual winners of the 2011 state MATHCOUNTS competition (in order of finish) are:

1. Daniel Qu, 7th grade, Wayzata Central Middle School, Plymouth
2. Utkarsh Koshti, 8th grade, Rosemount Middle School, Rosemount
3. Jenica Zhong, 8th grade, Wayzata Central Middle School
4. Vincent Dzik, 8th grade, Capitol Hill Magnet. St. Paul

These four won top honors from among 126 participants representing 42 schools at the 28th annual competition held Saturday, March 26, at the Radisson Conference Center in Pymouth.

The four students form the state team that will represent Minnesota at Washington, D.C., May 5-8, to compete in the national MATHCOUNTS competition against teams from throughout the United States.

Placing fifth and sixth were:
5. Matt Ehren, 8th grade, Mounds Park Academy, St. Paul
6. Seri Choi (female) 7th grade, Wayzata East Middle School. Plymouth

These two students will act as alternates should any of the top four be unable to attend.

Top Team Honors

The first place team at the meet was Wayzata Central Middle School in Plymouth, coached by Katie Tanke. Team members are David Mo, Jenica Zhon, Daniel Qu and Leighton Zhao.

As coach of the winning school team, Tanke will coach the State Team that is going to the National Finals.
